The History Of Fishing

There are many different types and styles of fishing, for example fishing for Carp is totally different to fishing for crab.

There are also different techniques for fishing. Fisherman may use nets, hooks, traps or different tackle for catching their fish. Recreation fishing however, more often than not, will use a hook and fishing line.

Fishing can also either be done on land or on sea, depending which type of fish you are looking to catch. Deep sea fishing open’s up a totally different type of fishing then casting a net out in a nearby lake.

Both can be done for recreation or sport, but both require different method and tactics when it comes to having a successful day of fishing.

Although fishing to some is for sport or recreation, fishing is still a large part of our food intake; therefore, the fishing industry is still a booming business when it comes to the food market.

Fisheries are said to provide at least 16% of the world’s population of protein. That is a massive amount and explains why fishing is such a big part of our lives today.

Fishing however isn’t as simple as just casting a net into a lake or rivers, there are things to consider both for the fishing industry as well as those who fish for sport or recreation.

The fishing industry must be aware of over fishing. Over fishing can reduce fish stocks below and acceptable level and have an affect on growth. If too many fish of one species are taken too quickly, this will slow down the profitability of fishing.

For those who fish for sport or recreation, including deep sea fishing, people need to be aware of whether or not a licence is required and what restrictions people have when a fish is caught. For example, it is sometimes expected that when a fish is caught that it is to be returned to the water.

Not all fish are permitted to be caught by hook in the mouth, instead, fisherman are restricted to catching these fish with nets only and then expected to be returned to the water. It is important to find out what licensing and law restrictions are in place for different types of fishing.

Recreation fishing was first reported on in 1496. Recreation fishing may have been an activity before this time, however it was never reported on earlier as the printing press was not in existence before that time.

Fisherman would keep a log of the fish they caught and submit them to independent recording bodies if fish were of trophy size. These would then be published to show different species of fish caught.

Fishing equipment as well as fishing bait and tackle all varies according to the conditions you fish in as well as the fish you intend to catch.

Whichever method of fishing you choose, it is an industry that has provided not only food on our tables, but also created a lot of fun for either sport or recreation, but it is important to respect laws that apply to the different types of fishing, so it is an activity that can carry on for years to come.
